Remembering the Tohoku Earthquake Victims
In total there is an estimated of 15,813 casualties due to the Great East Japan Earthquake of Tohoku, there were also 5,940 injured people and there are also 3.971 people reported missing. Victims aged 60 or older accounted for 65.2% of the lives lost, with 24% of total victims being in their 70s. It has been reported that 236 children were orphaned by the disaster.
Japan's National Police Agency has stated that 45,700 buildings were destroyed and 144,300 were damaged by the quake and tsunami. 300 hospitals with 20 beds or more in Tohoku were damaged by the disaster, with 11 being completely destroyed. The earthquake and tsunami created an estimated 24-25 million tons of rubble and debris in Japan.
